I) Advice for playing sports safely

As a doctor, I want to make sure that the patient can enjoy their sport while staying safe. The first thing I would tell them is to always wear the right protective gear for their sport, whether it is a helmet, mouthguard, or pads, and to make sure everything fits them properly because equipment that doesn't fit well won't protect them. I would also encourage the patients to always warm up before playing and cool down after, since skipping these steps is one of the most common reasons athletes get injured. Another very important point is to listen to the body. If something hurts, don't push through it, especially when it comes to head injuries. If the patient ever feel dizzy, confused, or nauseous after a hit to the head, they need to stop playing right away and see a doctor before going back on the field. Finally, I would remind them that sleep, good nutrition, and hydration are just as important as training, because a tired and poorly fueled body is much more likely to get hurt!

II) Questions I would ask the patient

Before clearing them to play, there are several things I would need to know. I would ask them if they have ever had a concussion or any kind of head injury in the past, and whether they have ever experienced chest pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath during exercise. I would also want to know if anyone in their family has had a history of heart problems or sudden death at a young age, since this can sometimes point to a condition that needs to be checked before they participate in intense physical activity. I would ask about any previous injuries like fractures, sprains, or dislocations that may not have fully healed, and whether they have any chronic conditions such as asthma or diabetes. Lastly, I would ask if they are currently taking any medications or supplements, and whether they have ever felt pressured to hide an injury or play through pain, because that kind of environment can be very dangerous for their health.

I really like your answer! It’s clear, well organized, and you covered all the important aspects of sports safety. I found it really interesting that you didn’t just focus on injuries in the second paragraph, but also mentioned family history and the pressure to play through pain (which is something we don’t always think about...).

I really like your answer. I think the advice and the questions are important for any physician to ask a patient especially in sports.
