When speaking to a patient during a pre-participation physical, I would emphasise the importance of practicing sports safely while also enjoying the benefits they offer. I would advice the patient to start gradually and not push themselves too hard at the beginning. A proper warm-up before exercises and a cool-down afterwards are essential to reduce the risk of injury. Wearing apropiate footwear and any necessary protective equipment is also important, as proper gear can prevent common injuries. I would stress the importance of staying hydrated, maintaining a balanced diet, and giving the body enough time to rest and recover. Listening to one’s body is crucial—if the patient experiences pain, dizziness, or unusual discomfort, they should stop the activity immediately. Finally, I would remind them to consider environmental conditions, like avoiding intense physical activity in extreme heat.
In order to better understand the patient’s readiness for sports, I would ask several questions. I would inquire if they have any chronic medical conditions, such as asthma, heart problems, or diabetes, and whether they are taking any medications. I would ask about any previous injuries, including fractures, joint problems, or concussions, and if they currently have any pain. It would be important to know if they have ever had symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or fainting during physical activity. I would also ask about their current level of physical activity, the type of sport they plan to participate in, and how often they intend to train. Finally, I would ask about family history, particularly regarding heart conditions or sudden cardiac events, to ensure a safe approach to contact sports.
